Alice M. "Willie" Martin

Alice M. “Willie” Martin, 92, of Central City, died on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Litzenberg Long Term Care Center in Central City. Memorial services will be on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Solt-Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with Pastor Delano Cunningham officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, June 9th from 9 a.m. until service time. Memorials are suggested to the family, and condolences may be sent to the family and www.soltwagnerfuneral.com. Alice Mae Shipman was born on June 28, 1924 in York, NE to H.R. and Lena (Yantz) Shipman. When she was little her parents divorced, and was adopted by her Aunt Arline Shipman. Arline later married John “Jack” May, who had been widowed and Arline and Jack raised his six children along with Alice. That is when she was given her nickname “Willie” by Jack who gave all of his children a nickname. Willie grew up in Chapman, and graduated from Chapman High School in 1940. Following her graduation she began working at Ury’s Drug Store in Chapman. She then married Delbert Post. To this union were two children; Judy and Donn Post. She then later married, Leslie “Darrell” Martin from Central City. Willie then helped raised his two sons, Darrell “Bud” and Dan Martin. For many years, Willie worked at the Chapman Coop Elevator as a bookkeeper. She then moved to Central City and began working for Bill’s Volume Sales, the Grand Island YMCA, and Foster’s Lumber Company. After her retirement, Willie remained in Central City, living at Bader Villa and eventually she was moved to Litzenberg Long Term Care Center. Willie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Chapman, American Legion Auxiliary, and Eagle’s Auxiliary, as well as volunteering at the Long Term Care Center. She enjoyed her friends, raising flowers, playing in pool and bowling leagues, but her greatest love was getting to be around her family. Those left to cherish her memory are her children; Judy Balka of Lincoln and Donn (Tessie) Post of Jacksonville, FL, her stepson; Dan (Sharon) Martin of Papillion, her stepdaughter-in-law; Shari Martin of Longmont, CO, her granddaughter; Sara (Ryan) White of McKinney, TX, three great-grandsons; Hudson, Lucas, and Beckett White of McKinney, TX and two step-grandchildren; Aaron Martin of Longmont, CO, Emily Martin of Papillion. She was preceded in death by her husband; Darrell Martin, her stepson; Darrell “Bud” Martin and son-in-law; M. Berri Balka.
