Cheryl (Shelton) Hanke

Cheryl D. (Shelton) Hanke, 82, of Columbus, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Sunday, August 11, 2024. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Solt-Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Pat Sparling officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 15th from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Central City Cemetery in Central City. Cheryl was born on August 31, 1941 in Central City to Max Jr. and Maxine (Chandler) Shelton. She grew up in the Central City area and graduated from Central City High School in 1959. Following her graduation, she attended Lincoln School of Commerce and returned to Central City to work in the telephone office. On February 25, 1961 Cheryl was united in marriage to Dean Hanke in Winner, South Dakota. In 1977 they moved to Columbus, where she stayed home to raise their children and later was Dean’s secretary. Cheryl was heavily involved in square dancing. She booked the dances and handled the finances, but most of all she enjoyed Dean’s calling and singing. Her other activities included quilting, reading, gardening, and collecting recipes. Her greatest accomplishment was the love and support she gave her family.
