Wayne Butch Thompson

August 9, 1936 - June 12, 2022

Butch attended grade school and high school in Hansel, Iowa. He attended a year at Upper Iowa University. Butch and Marge met at a roller skating rink. They were married on August 10th, 1956. Butch went to work for Maryland Causality Company. They moved to Altoona so he could commute to Des Moines. Their daughter Terrie and son Ron were born during these years. In 1966 Leland Wegner (brother-in-law) offered him a partnership in the Archer Fertilizer Plant. The Luebbe brothers moved the Thompson family to Archer where Butch and Marge lived until they each moved into nursing homes. Butch was a believer in higher education and helped many of his customers' children attend college through scholarships. Due to the farm crisis of the 1980s, he was forced to close the plant. He then got into farming. They had a small cow herd that Marge loved helping check on. They raised potatoes, popcorn, and field corn. He also had farrowing operations. Butch and his son Ron, also of Archer, started Thompson and Dad Trucking. They traveled across the United States and met lots of people. Butch played baseball, and fast-pitch softball for many years. His family cheered him on as he struck out many a batter. Butch got his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying his Cessna to Texas for the winter. He also enjoyed fishing and golfing. Butch and Marge spent many winters in Harlingen, Texas and Flagler Beach, Florida where they could enjoy these pastimes. They also enjoyed California. This led to more travels to visit all the snowbirds they met in their home states. Many of them lived on the east coast. The family loved his grilling skills! His specialties were Pork loin, Teriyaki Steak, and Prime Rib. Butch and Marge opened their home to many over the years. Larry Thompson, brother, lived with them during his college years. His son, David, spent summers with them. They helped raise grandson Daniel Flodman. When great grandsons Anthony and Ayden Flodman went into foster care, Marge and Butch took custody of them. They didn't want them to be separated. Butch was still raising Ayden when he went on hospice. His goal was to live until Ayden graduated. He met his goal. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter Terrie (Cody) Conner of Kearney, his brother Lawrence (Eve) Thompson of San Francisco, his 4 grandchildren, Kenneth Flodman, Jessie Flodman Ross, Daniel Flodman, and Benjamin Thompson plus their 25 great grandchildren. Butch was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Margie, his son Ron Thompson, and his sister Shirley (Thompson) Larson of Lincoln.
